Bush Addresses NAACP Convention: A Review

After nearly five years of ignoring the oldest organization for the advancement of American blacks, President George W. Bush finally makes an appearance at the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held this year in Washington, D.C..We wonder why it took so long for the President to acknowledge this organization. We don’t think it was worth the wait.

His remarks were full of platitudes, ("I come from a family committed to civil rights") and vague promises. ("So I came to Washington and I worked with Democrats and Republicans to pass the No Child Left Behind Act.") I hope his negotiations with Bruce Gordon, president of the NAACP, et al, are more substantive.

President Bush spent a goodly amount of time stating the obvious, and giving his version of revisionist history of slavery in this country. ("Slavery was legal for nearly a hundred years, and discrimination legal in many places for nearly a hundred years more.") Conveniently not counting the two or three hundred years of slavery before we were officially a country. (Review continues NEXT POST)
