World AIDS Day~ Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise
Today is the day the entire world has designated to take action to halt the deadly epidemic HIV/AIDS.
For 25 years we have seen celebrities, friends, family members, co-workers and great numbers of people unknown to us world-wide succumb to this devastating disease. There are an estimated 40 million people around the world living with HIV.
We have also seen great improvements in medical treatment for those infected. Healthcare experts say an infected person can extend his/her life by 25 years when they are diagnosed early; people who are made aware of their infection status years after exposure can, with standard treatment extend their lives as well.
It is estimated more than 1 million Americans are living with HIV/AIDS. New cases of the disease are occurring among women and young people in astronomical numbers everyday. While the numbers of Americans living with HIV continues to advance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), there are another estimated quarter million who have not been diagnosed. Many of those who are undiagnosed account for about 70 percent of the sexually transmitted disease (STDs) infections nationwide.
The campaign theme this year, "Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise" is an appeal to governments and policy makers to be accountable. Accountability equals responsibility and therefore legislators, policy makers, medical officials, all are asked to change the direction of this catastrophic epidemic by following through.
The government likes to address this problem by admonishing the young to practice abstinence. We would like in this matter to give back to the government their own advice, "Stop F--king around."
Do the work! Implement the policies. Educate the public. Allocate the money. Pay for the drugs. Conduct the research. Do the work that needs to be done to put this deadly disease down. Create a world that is safer for all of us, but especially the next generations our young and our children. It is a pretty sad day when you have to be afraid to even procreate. And the government that is supposed to be for the people, by the people and of the people won't do what it can to do something about it.
Not to be left out of the equation are all the sexually active people. You are called upon to act responsibly. Protect yourselves. Protect your partners. Get tested.
Behaving responsibly is the only way all of us can provide ourselves and our children a chance for a satisfying, reedeming life.
