POLITICAL NEWS: Charles Barkley, Michael Bloomberg,
Donald Trump
The Wall Street Journal recently reported the Republican Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloombergis considering a run for the highest office in the land. That's right Bloomberg, is rumored to be considering a possible run as an independent candidate, for President of the United States. He's got experience, he's good with the national media, and he's certainly got enough bank to fund a campaign. Of course none of these things really matter when running in a presidential election, except of course the money to finance such an endeavor. The only thing is-- no modern independent candidate has made a successful run for the office of president.
Looks like Lynn Swan is not the only former professional athlete who's tossing his hat into the ring in a gubernatorial race. Charles Barley, known to some as the "Round Mound of Rebound", is talking about running for governor of his home state of Alabama in 2010.
A political-science professor at Auburn University, said Barkley, the former Auburn and NBA star is getting ahead of himself by talking about possibly running without first building a base of support or looking at finances.
Barkley, a native of Leeds, Alabama, has been talking about running for governor of the state since he was playing with the NBA Phoenix Suns. In previous years he said he was considering running in 1998 as a Republican. That never happened.
Barkley continued to identify himself as a Republican until lately, when he became a registered Democrat.
Barkley while speaking to a convention of public school board members in Destin, Fla. said:
It's been reported that, for the first time since the 2000 election cycle, real estate tycoon, Donald Trump, and two of his children, contributed a total of $50,000 in late June to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Last year Trump donated $1,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee. As reported in the congressional newspaper Roll Call "Democratic sources said the contributions were unsolicited, but noted that Trump is close to longtime Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y."
The "Contributor Employer Break-Out" listing on PoliticalMoneyLine.com, which tells where Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee contributions from employers originated, the Trump Organization is ranked fifth in donations to the DCCC in June – behind "N/A," "Self-Employed," "Blank" and "Information Requested."
