Caballero Hoping To Break Through Pelenchin
Ask a Panamanian who is the most beloved active athlete from their country and the answer might astonish you. Most Americans would automatically guess it was Mariano Rivera. That would be wrong. While Rivera and Carlos Lee are certainly the most internationally well known Panamanian athletes, Celestino Caballero is number one in the hearts of Panamanians. That is likely a result of him never forgetting where he comes from. He might stay for awhile in the United States to live and train, but he always displays pride and love for his people.
Now that he has conquered Panama, can he do the same here in the States? At 33, time is running short for him to leave a mark. Except for the hardcore boxing fans, he is unknown here. Despite a fantastic record, numerous championships, a prospering music career, and an ego as large as the most famous boxers in the sport, he has yet to make a splash stateside. But now the tide may be turning in his favor.
“Pelenchin” recently signed with famed promoter Lou DiBella, ending a very unhappy union with Warrior Boxing. Whereas he was unable to get big matches and publicity with his former handler, DiBella is sure to give him every opportunity to shine. It’s up to him to capitalize on his chance. His upcoming fights will likely all appear on HBO thanks to DiBella’s ties to the channel. This will give him a great chance to showcase his skills for a larger audience. During his recent HBO bout with Indonesia’s Daud Yordan, Pelenchin seized the opportunity with a lopsided 12 round destruction of the young fighter. His performance lit up the message boards as many said it was time for Pelenchin to get his opportunity with more well known foes Yorkis Gamboa and Juan Manuel Lopez.
Of course those that follow boxing closely know that there is one opponent Caballero covets more than all the rest; Juanma. He has made videos, done interviews, and made internet photos calling out the Puerto Rican. All have gone unanswered. Bob Arum has wisely kept his fighter as far away from Caballero as possible, always ready with an excuse. Until now, Pelenchin was easily dismissed. Poorly represented and fighting in relative obscurity, there was no great outcry forcing Juanma or other top fighters to step up and challenge the lanky Panamanian. With his new representation, it will no longer be as easy to dismiss him. And that is good news for fans of boxing.
Fans outside of Panama have not been exposed to one of the great characters in all of boxing. During his fight with Yordan he started talking to people at ringside. He talked to Yordan. In fact he talks to anyone who will listen. Sometimes when he unleashes one of his effective, yet awkward punches, he lets out a musical yelp. Then of course you have his singing. He trains to the sounds of his own music as well as when he walks to the ring. “El Campion del Ghetto” is as wrapped up in his music as he is with his fighting. But the best thing about Pelenchin is that he is true to himself.
He will fight anybody at any time. If he were offered a chance for the Heavyweight title, I have no doubt he would take it in a moment. And he would have no doubt in his ability to win that fight. He fights for himself, his family, and his country. Petty boxing politics have never got in his way. He always says exactly what he thinks. In this respect, the lack of strong representation he has had previously has been a good thing. He has not been molded into something he is not. Let’s hope that Dibella is able to provide him with greater opportunities while not taking away his individuality.
