Strategic Wagering For Major League Baseball (MLB)

Sep 23, 2010 in Major League Baseball

As time has shown, if given the opportunity, people will bet on just about anything and at anytime! Throughout history people have found things to wager on, from cockfighting to bare knuckle fights to horse racing to baseball and much more! In the past, sportsbook betting was limited to fixed locations, with information coming by word-of-mouth, newspapers, and at the event site. Baseball Picks

With the Internet a new wagering platform was created. The once restricted pastime evolved into worldwide wagering opportunities that you could access 24/7 on your home PC while in your PJ’s. Yee haw! With global sport betting at consumers’ fingertips, it’s no wonder that the convenience of the web has resulted in rapid growth and surging popularity in the sportsbook industry. The major sportsbook websites have numerous features, including live lines and odds, information about sports, commentaries on contests and wagering opportunities. Some even offer a daily live radio show focusing on sports and sports betting on the web!

With new electronic opportunities, new strategies developed in sports wagering. On the web, each sport’s betting event possesses preferred wagering strategies. Major League Baseball season has started and it’s a great time to review the ins and outs of Strategic Wagering for the sport.

Hey, what is Major League Baseball without betting for or against the outcome! When you have something going besides the actual game, like the bettor’s action, things get very exciting when watching the highs and lows of the contest. Just thinking about it can give you an adrenaline rush!

Although wagering on MLB has some peculiarities, overall it’s pretty straightforward. In the following sections, we will cover basic bets common to MLB. These include:

Straight or Side bets: These are the most common MLB wagers– “betting to win or lose.”

Run lines: Most popular for MLB, a combination of Point Spread and Money Line.

Money lines: Next best for MLB, which gives odds that one team will beat another.

Over/unders (total runs): The bettor is wagering for the game to go over or under the run total.

Action points: Team against team, regardless of the starting pitchers. However, if there is a change in one or both of the starting pitchers, the bettor still has a wager, but the price will be adjusted according to the new starting pitcher.

Point spreads: Used as a margin to handicap the favorite team.World Series Picks

Head to head propositions: This is “betting to win” on one sports figure/team against another sports figure/team.

Note: These wagers have no built-in mathematical advantage in a sports event. Why? Sports are independent events and are not ruled by probability theory! Instead, the sportsbook acts as a broker and gains a commission only on losing bets. This commission is called vigorish, vig or juice and typically is 10% of your wager. So if you are wagering $100, you place $110 (11/10 odds). If you win you get $210; or if you lose, you lose $110 and the Sportsbook gets the $10.

Straight bets are the most common MLB wager. When you place a straight bet, you simply pick the team that will win or lose the game. All straight bets have 11/10 odds, unless otherwise noted at the time of the wager. This translates into the sportsbook making 10% vigorish (juice) on losing wagers.

    OddsRiskGet Juice (lose only) Win
    Straight$110$100$10$210
    Straight buy ½ point$120$100$20$220
    Straight buy 1 point$130$100$30$230

The format used for sportsbook wagering charts is displayed differently and will look more like:

Major League Baseball Run Line Money Line Game Total
    HcapPricePriceOver/Under Price

    Datetime905(Away Team & Pitcher)+1.5-220+104O: 9.0-120
    (Home Team & Pitcher)- 1.5+180- 114U: 9.0+100

    DateTime906Dodgers Valdez+1.5+115- 138O: 9.5-115
    ExposHermanson- 1.5-135+128U: 9.5-105

    DateTime907Athletics Loaiza +1.5-220+112O: 10.0-120
    TwinsSilva- 1.5+170 -122U: 10.0+100

This typical sportsbook wagering chart is compact and shows the Run line, Money Line and Over/Under Straight Bet with the odds. This compact format will list the Away Team wager line first, then the Home Team wager line. The minus sign (e.g. -130) always indicates the favorite and the amount you must bet to win $100. The line without the minus sign (e.g. +120) always indicates the underdog and the amount you win for every $100 bet. Using this example, therefore, you would bet $130 to win $100 on the favorite, while for the underdog you would bet $100 to win $120.

Run Lines: The MLB Run Line is a combination of the Point Spread and the Money Line. The team you wager on must win by covering the Run Line spread. The amount you lay down is determined by the Money Line odds next to the Run Line spread. (Odds are primarily determined by who’s pitching). The same rules that apply for the Totals apply for the Run Lines. When wagering on the Expos Run Line, the team selected must win by at least 2 runs. When wagering on the Dodgers Run Line, the selected team can lose the game, but not by more that one run. Note: Run Lines are always “listed pitchers”.

Money Lines: When wagering on sides, if you are betting the favorite, you will be laying odds. When betting on the underdog, you will be picking the odds. The odds for each game are based on who is pitching.MLB Picks

Over/Under: Waging on the total runs scored on the game (both teams combined, overtime included). If you wager on the Dodgers/Exposes game to go OVER the predicted total, the amount of the runs on the game must be more than 10 in order to win the wager. If you wager on the Dodgers/Expos game to go UNDER the predicted total, the amount of runs on the game must not exceed 9 in order to win the wager. The game must go 9 innings (8.5 if the home team is ahead) to have action.

Those are the basic wagering strategies for Major League Baseball! With this basic information, the beginner should feel comfortable with looking at and figuring out how to use a typical sportsbook wagering chart.

    New York Yankees Baseball Preview

Sep 22, 2010 in Major League Baseball

The 2007 lineup for the New York Yankees’ may quite possibly the most powerful hitting squad baseball has seen. With the number of star players on the team, they should win the AL East for their tenth year in a row, and there is no reason they shouldn’t continue that trend through the post season. Here is a look at what you can expect to see from the Yankees in 2007.Free MLB Picks

First of all, losing Gary Sheffield was bad for the Yankees. In two seasons, Gary was accepted as the Most Valuable Player for the team. Now he plays for the Detroit Tigers, leaving the Yankee’s team wounded. Bobby Abreu has a chance to prevent the loss from affecting the team negatively, but he’s going to have to continue playing like he has since he’s been in New York, or else this year will end like last year for him.

2007 starter Robinson Cano ranked as the best offensive second baseman, and second place overall. At the young age of twenty three, he’s got all of his best years right ahead of him. Cano’s defensive game isn’t very strong, but this year should see some improvement on that.

Alex Rodriguez will be another strong contender for the Yankees this year. He should be able to have another MVP season, as long as he can come to terms with how good he really is. His defense is strong, which is a saving grace with the lack of defense from most of the team—however, a little support for him might be a good idea. Though nothing like 1999 or 2006, Derek Jeter should have another good season. Hopefully he can stay on the same trend of improving on his poor range. Proline Baseball Picks

The ’07 outfielders form a very potent offensive outfield, probably the best in the league. We should see Bobby Abreu return his numbers to normal, hitting twenty or twenty five home runs. Productivity should be up from Hideki Matsui as well. Much is resting on this collection of players this year.

For the sake of the Yankees, we really need to see some improvement in Wang’s pitching. We simply need more strike outs from him. With a fastball upwards of ninety four MPH, and a slider in the 80’s, he should be able to strike a lot more people out, so the fans are waiting.

Although a little rusty recently, Jason Giambi is still one of the leagues greatest hitters. Giambi will be designated hitter again this year. This should ensure that he won’t break down towards the end of the season for the Yankees.Free MLB Picks

The question isn’t whether or not they’ll make the playoffs; some say that’s a guarantee. The question left remaining is whether or not the team will advance in the postseason. Whether on paper or on the field, the New York Yankees are by far the American League’s best team, with the Dodgers being the only possible challenge in all of baseball for them.

MLB Baseball & NFL Football Picks

NFL Picks & MLB Playoff Hunt Picks

Got facked yet once again by the MLB Player yesterday and guess what I’m goin’ back to the well to get cornholed again!!!! HAHAHAHA!!! On with me TGIF Mixed Bag of Peeks …

4H REDSKINS @ 1.80 OVER BILLS – Preseason is really tuff to pick but with McNabb goin’ for a quarter and 2 viable backs in Larry Johnson and Willie Parker fighting for the back-up spot behind Portis I really do like the Redskins offensively. New coaches for both sides as Shanahan is one of the best vs. Galey who with his days with the Cowboys was 2-8 ATS in Preseason games.

18H BLUEBOMBERS @ 1.80 OVER TI-CATS – 4th and final meeting between these 2 teams this season. All 3 games won by homeside. Both teams 0-3 on the road. Peggers 2nd over-all in offense and 2nd over-all in defense. Buck probable to make return if not running game with Reid will get it done. Ti-Cats lucky to hang on to last second victory in 3rd game vs. Bombers. Also good to see the Bombers releasing their PK Alexis Serna who was only 8 for 14 on field goal attempts this season and really cost the Bombers a couple of games due to those missed opportunities. Like the Bombers to avenge the road loss with a home win in the 2nd leg of this home and home tonite regardless of whether or not Buck starts.

32H KONERKO @ 2.00 OVER CABRERA – Here we go again!!!! Facked by Bautista’s bomb and then facked by Konerko’s 7th inning single yesterday to tie Mauer I’m back at it with yet another Player Pick. First of all Cabrera struggling big time … 5-19 for a .172 avg. for the month of August … 3-25 vs. ChiSox in 2010 … and 0-15 vs. Buerhrle career!!!! Konerko a career 11-36 for a .306 career avg. vs. Robertson with 5 of those 11 hits goin’ for homeruns!!!! Also 13-29 for a .448 avg. vs. Tigers in 2010. So Konerko seems to have the Tigers number and the ChiSox seem to have Cabrera’s number.

Having said that I do like the Skins chances Oil. Edwards, Fitzpatrick and Brohmn have done nothin’ for the Bills so they absohootly strike no fear in me. Actually the Bills better be able to stop the running game tonite cause it won’t matter which QB is in for the Skins if they can’t stop the run. Just think after Portis you have Johnson and Parker guys than bust the big run!!! I think the Skins are gonna run the ball alot tonite and now that they don’t have that siv Campbell back there anymore they’re a better team over-all. Plus Zorn and that West Coast Offense just didn’t work. It’s Shanahan Time baby!!!!

On NHL Hockey note, I hate to admit but the Sens got themselves a terrible match-up cause they will not beat the Pens. Had they met up vs. the Sabres they would have dismantled them. Too many good teams in the West from top to bottom and past history has and will dictate Sharks choke by 2nd Round.

    Steroids In Baseball

Aug 08, 2010 in Major League Baseball

The pharmaceutical anabolic steroids are believed to have been inadvertently discovered by German scientists in the early 1930s. Anabolic steroids or androgenic steroids are the synthetic derivatives of testosterone that promote muscle and bone growth. These steroids are medically used to treat uncontrolled weight loss in wasting diseases.
However, these steroids are often used by bodybuilders, athletes, and sports persons to increase their muscle mass, strength, and stamina. The first known use of anabolic steroid— testosterone propionate was mentioned in US weightlifting/bodybuilding magazine, Strength and Health magazine in 1938.

The International Amateur Athletic Federation, now the International Association of Athletics Federations, became the first international governing body of sport to ban anabolic steroids in sports. These drugs were banned by FIFA, Union Cycliste Internationale (cycling), and International Olympic Committee in 1966-67.

However, Major League Baseball remained lenient about the use of steroids in baseball. The use of steroids in baseball became hotly debatable in the mid 1990s. Steroids in baseball became hot subject of sports news, magazines, and rumors. Though, a 1988 US federal law declared the use and distribution of anabolic steroid drugs for nontherapeutic illegal, Major League Baseball did not test for steroids in baseball until 2003.
The was a drastic rise in home runs since 1995 that greatly contributed to strengthening the influence of steroids in baseball; Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds had all stunningly surpassed the home run record set by Roger Maris – whose 61 homers in 1961 had not been challenged in over 30 years.
Often, post 1994 period is referred to as “Steroids Era.” There were a number of stories on steroids in baseball. The first evidence of steroids in baseball came out when a bottle of a nutritional supplement was found in Mark McGwire´s locker; the bottle was found containing Androstendione, a prohormone. Ken Caminiti revealed to Sports Illustrated that he won the 1996 NL MVP award while on steroids. He also revealed that 50% of the players in the league were using steroids. In a book published during steroids in baseball imbroglio, Jose Canseco admitted using steroids and also revealed that 85% of all players in MLB were using steroids.

The fact was “eye-opener” for MLB. The Journalists Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada exposed the BALCO scandal associated with steroids in baseball & other sports in 2003. The nutrition center BALCO, was accused of distributing steroids to many star players, like Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield, Benito Santiago, Jeremy Giambi, Bobby Estalella, and Armando Rios.

The most famous instances of steroids in baseball are that of Jason Giambi and Barry Bonds, who were suspected of using anabolic steroids in baseball. Giambi admitted before a U.S. grand jury that he used a duo of undetectable steroids known respectively as “the cream” and “the clear.” He also admitted that he received the drugs from his personal trainer Greg Anderson during the 2003 season. On the other hand, Bonds revealed that his trainer told him the substances were the nutritional supplement flaxseed oil and a pain-relieving balm for his arthritis.

The Major League Baseball conducted random testing steroids in baseball in 2003. The League toughened its policies a bit on the use of steroids in baseball. The players, such as Ryan Franklin and others were suspended for ten days, but a Congressional panel argued that the penalties were not tough enough, and took action. Thus, several top players, such as Rafael Palmeiro, McGwire, Sosa, Canseco and Curt Schilling were testified in front of Congress on March 17, 2005. Congress has been continuously pressuring MLB for instituting a comprehensive testing policy for its players.

Baseball Bats And How They Have Distorted Over Time

Jun 25, 2010 in Major League Baseball

Selecting a baseball bat is a fairly difficult challenge with so many options available. Being a baseball coach for a number of years and within the latest years, I’ve observed that the “golfer” syndrome has been present in baseball.
For example many golfers do not get to work on their sport as much as they like, they consider that by buying the most expertise and best in golf clubs, that their play will routinely improve. There are the super fiber shafts, or over sized heads that value hundreds for every club.

Unfortunately, gamers have caught on to this syndrome. The know-how can definitely assist, but it’s surely not the answer. Gamers have grow to be (more…)
