What To Consider When Buying Two Way Radios

    Aug 05, 2011 in Communications

All around us, there are several manners of communication. Cell phones are attached to hips everywhere and the internet provides immediate access to email and instant messaging with a few mouse clicks. As technologically advanced as communication has become, two way radios are still quite popular devices used to talk to others. Their services are employed on construction sites and even by family members who wish to maintain a line of communication if needed while a short distance away from one another. Following is a guide for buyers interested in two way radios.

For an operation such as a construction project, two way radios that offer several channels are effective. Because there are several distinct frequencies to choose from, crew members do not have to worry about talking over each other and cutting off conversations of members on different teams. Conventional two way radios that operate on designated RF channels are often employed in these situations. These models feature toggle switches and dials that allow the user to choose a frequency that select other radios are tuned to. For example, the members of the digging team will use a certain frequency, while the members of the building team use another.

Crews and other businesses that operate in similar situations might look toward trunked two-way radios. Radios of this type automatically select a channel when certain protocol is met and join the selected conversation. In this setup, a control channel sends out a signal that the individual radios pick up on and communicate on when desired. It is the entire group of radios that makes up the network, and the electronic chips inside initiate the conversation.

Families also benefit from two way radios. When members are in rooms not adjacent to one another or even when traveling in separate cars, they may want to be able to talk to each other in case of emergency or if a question arises. Analog two way radios are fine for these situations. They are not digital, so multiple conversations are not possible. In this case, it is not a problem because only two people will be talking at once. Push-to-talk radios experienced a boom in sales when the major cellular companies promoted their use. By pressing a rocker switch, a chirp is emitted that indicates a channel is open and available for conversation.

Several types of two way radios exist for many occasions. Whichever you choose is dependent upon its features and your needs. Crews on a construction project will need more elaborate models than a husband and wife talking in nearby vehicles. With some shopping around, you will certainly locate a radio that does what you need it to do.

    Category 6 Cables – A Networking Essential

    Jun 03, 2011 in Communications

It is a digital world, there is no doubt about it. Office buildings are hubs of data transmission and reception, and homes have become hotbeds of entertainment options. These digital signals may be sent by various means, such as optical fiber, cables, and wirelessly. As speedily as a signal is sent without wires, hardwiring a device often yields the quickest signal transmission speeds. Ethernet cables are often the cable of choice when it comes to propagating signals. Category 6 cables are some of the fastest Ethernet wires available, and they provide a variety of uses.

As the internet gained momentum and other electronic devices such as home theater systems and televisions began to enter the digital age, Ethernet cables experienced a surge in popularity along with them. In order to continue to deliver audio and video in a manner that people had become accustomed to by way of over-the-air frequencies, a cable had to be developed that would transmit adequate bits quickly enough to satisfy customers. The Ethernet cables were designed to do so, and as these unshielded, twisted-pair (UTP) cables evolved, they were given increasing category numbers. Category 6 cables are the industry standard in speed (6A is still pricey, but very fast), having replaced Category 5 and 5e.

Though Category 6 cables are fast, they are ideal for residential applications more often than for businesses. For example, an office building is usually outfitted adequately with a fiber optic network or Fast Ethernet network. At home, however, movies and music comprise a large portion of the leisure activities enjoyed by residents. The speeds needed to download and view them are best handled by Category 6 cables.

Stretched between a computer and a modem is where you will find many Category 6 cables. They are quick, and these UTP cables are capable of transmitting signals at speeds of 10 Gbits/sec up to 55 meters of cable. Anything longer, and the signal and speed will decrease. Multiple, simultaneous channels are easily handled by Category 6 cables.

Homes are not the only establishments that utilize Category 6 cables. A hospital in Virginia was one of the first of its kind to install the cables throughout the building in order to broadcast television to patients and employees. As time goes on, wireless signals will of course become faster and better in quality, but for now Ethernet cables are as quick as it gets, especially Category 6.

Types Of Two Way Radios – An Overview

    May 09, 2011 in Communications

Two way radios are very handy means of communication, and they are everywhere. For instant relaying of information, they get the job done better than most other devices. Some devices with which you are no doubt familiar are the popular walkie-talkies and family communicators. Cellular telephones are also examples of two way radio technology. Though the job they perform is similar, various two way radios accomplish their tasks in different manners. There are many types of two way radios.

Conventional two way radios are those that use designated RF channels. Quite a few varieties of conventional radios operate on multiple channel settings that may be selected by way of toggle switches, buttons, and dials. The user selects a particular frequency to talk on and selects it. In a multiple channel system, the various frequencies each have a specific purpose. For example, a crew on a construction site may have one channel assigned to supervisors and another is set aside for communications between those on the ground and workers operating heavy machinery. Trunked two way radios automatically select a channel. A control channel constantly sends out a signal that is monitored by all of the radios on the system. When one interprets the proper protocol, that radio joins the conversation. Do not let the name control channel fool you, because radios are assembled by groups rather than by individual channels. Additionally, trunked radios contain electronics that establish connections based on a given protocol.

Several years ago, push-to-talk two way radios enjoyed a boom in sales when cellular phones began utilizing the technology. Pushing a rocker button emits a chirp that alerts the user to the fact that a particular channel is open for use. Like a walkie-talkie, the button is then released so that the other party is able to talk. Other types of two way radios operate on an analog signal. The family communicators that many people keep in their cars while traveling often use analog. One of the major differences between analog and digital is that analog may support only one conversation at a time. Another type of two way radio uses a simplex system, while others utilize duplex. Simplex systems use one channel for both transmission and reception. Duplex systems operate on two signals. Some two way radios are a simplex/duplex hybrid. They most often operate on a duplex system, but will switch to simplex if out of range. Two way radios have long been the standard in direct communication. Each type of radio has its advantages and disadvantages. Essentially, it comes down to how many conversations are needed at a time.

Advice On Choosing A Broadband Provider

    Jan 18, 2011 in Communications

Broadband internet has now been available to the public for some time now and it is obvious to say that because of this, the internet has evolved. Web pages have always and will always continue to be optimized so that the information contained in them can be accessed as quickly as possible. When we were all using 56k modem connections, this meant that websites had to keep images to a minimum, even bearing in mind the complexity (in terms of pixels) of a particular image, and embedded videos and especially music were almost always avoided on popular websites.

As is expected, an increase in the popularity of internet connections has meant a similar increase in the number of companies offering broadband connections. Sometimes, though, deciding on a broadband provider can be more difficult than it needs to be with all the different packages available. Below is some advice that should help you through the procedure of choosing a broadband internet provider.

What you need to consider first is whether you require a wired DSL or cable connection, a wireless connection, or even a mobile wireless connection. A wired DSL connection is simply data sent through your existing phone line, whereas with a cable connection, the data is sent via a coaxial cable. The difference between a wireless and a mobile wireless connection is that wireless connections are wide area network connections and you are ultimately limited by the coverage area of the satellite dish that is sending the signal, whereas with mobile wireless broadband a signal is sent from a telephone tower and therefore provides a much larger coverage area.

Once you have decided on what kind of internet connection you want, you now need to find out what companies operate in your local area. If you can access the internet, this will be your best resource for finding information on what companies can help you and exactly what packages they can offer you for internet access. Most companies offer varying degrees of bandwidth, though remember that the chances are that you may never even achieve the advertised speed.

Some ISPs are able to provide package deals that bundle broadband internet, digital television and telephone line contracts into one monthly payment. This type of package can, in many cases, work out to be cheaper than the alternative solution of using a different company for each service, but be aware of exactly what you require and if you are working to a tight budget, then you should ask yourself if you really need the extra services.

As with many things, if you take your time to first work out what you need, what is available and what you can afford then choosing a provider to suit your requirements becomes a much easier job. It is advisable to spend a large amount of time not only researching available packages, but also reading customer reviews and feedback on internet forums for honest reviews on the services provided.

Advice On Speeding Up Your Home Broadband Connection

    Jan 16, 2011 in Communications

When the internet first became globally available to the public, we were all limited to 56k dial-up modem connections that could only handle a very slow amount of data transfer through telephone lines. This meant that websites had to be streamlined so that users would not get bored with the load times and seek out other websites. With the evolution of data transfer services and the introduction of broadband internet connections, websites still need to be optimized in many respects, but the amount of data that they can contain has increased dramatically.

As is always going to be the case, everybody wants a faster connection, until there is no waiting involved at all. Although that final result may never be achievable, there are some simple ways to speed up your current connection without spending any more money. Sometimes the easiest and quickest option is the most effective. If you have recently experienced a decrease in your internet access speeds and you are unsure as to why or how it happened, the first thing you should try is to turn off both your pc and router and turn them on again, first the router, then the pc. Sometimes conflicting or incorrect data is loaded by the pc and it could just take a reboot to get things back to normal.

If you are using a wireless connection, it helps to be as close to the wireless router as possible. If it is possible then try to position your wireless router in the same room as your computer, and aim the aerial vertically to ensure the best possible broadcast area. If this is not possible then try to make sure that there is as little as possible, in terms of walls and electrical appliances, in between your pc and the router. Wireless connections are not only useful, but they reduce all the clutter that can take over your house by using ethernet cables linking the computers in your home. The only downside is that they are not as stable and consistent as wired connections so if you really want to make the most from your broadband, look into getting some wired connections installed.

It is possible to speed up your connection just by monitoring exactly what your computer is doing with your internet connection. There are some programs that like to be in constant communication with the internet and therefore sap away valuable bandwidth from what you are doing and also, even having an excessive number of programs running in the background can slow down your internet connection indirectly. More running programs means less random access memory for your computer to think with. Make sure that you are only using what programs you actually need by looking at the open programs in your taskbar and closing any unnecessary ones.

New York Girl Asks: “Is There A Santa Claus?”

Dec 24, 2010 in We Think

The following editorial is one of the most famous ever written. In 1897 it was published in the long defunct The New York Sun newspaper. We believe it will always be appropriate as long as the question remains, “Is there A Santa Claus?”.  Merry Christmas, everyone!

We take pleasure in answering at once and thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

    Dear Editor,

    I am 8 years old.

Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.‘  Please tell me the truth: Is there a Santa Claus?

    Virginia O’Hanlon
    115 W. 95th St.

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except (what) they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. (more…)

Why You Should Be Using A Toll Free Number

    Dec 23, 2010 in Communications

In order to succeed in business nowadays you need to offer more than product innovation or price. You need to make yourself known to the public; you need to get your head above everybody elses. This ultimately means utilizing every marketing resource available to you. One effective way of doing so is to get your business a toll free telephone number.

The great thing about toll free telephone numbers is that they are easier for the general public to remember than standard telephone numbers, which means that, coupled with the fact that all calls made to that number are free, you business is much more likely to receive calls from customers regarding your services or products.

A toll free number is not difficult at all to set up and, if required, can come with many other services such as an answer service, call forwarding, call screening, call waiting, call conferencing, call recording and many others. On top of this, a toll free number is generally much easier to remember than a standard number coupled with an area code.

The most common way for a business to acquire a toll free telephone number is to contact a RespOrg, which is an abbreviation of Responsible Organization. A RespOrg is an organization that has access to the SMS/800 database which contains the registration details of every 800 number there is. Although they may or may not be a telephone company, they are independently regulated by the FCC.

Some companies prefer to acquire vanity numbers in order to further improve the customers ability at remembering the contact details. A vanity number is a telephone number that uses digits in the number to spell out a product, service, company name or acronym, for example 1-800-CHEESES or 1-800-TALK2ME.

In order to prevent warehousing or the hoarding of telephone numbers, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) help regulate the industry by setting rules to which RespOrgs and other entities offering toll free numbers must adhere to. Warehousing is the process of reserving a number without an intended subscriber for that number and hoarding (which also includes number brokering) means obtaining more numbers than a subscriber intends to use.

Toll free numbers are a great way for you to keep in touch with your customers. With free calls, customers are much more likely to contact you and hopefully, purchase products or services. Plus, it is a great way to stay up-to-date on trends in the market.

Getting A Non Geographical Phone Number For Your Business

    Dec 20, 2010 in Communications

It can be confusing for customers if your business has many different offices all over a country as they may find it hard finding or remembering the specific telephone number for their local office. This is where non geographical telephone numbers come in. The idea is that you register one telephone number with which customers can access your business, anywhere, in a particular country. As a substitute for local dialing codes, non geographical numbers use a set prefix and number.

Businesses can choose from a wide range of non geographical telephone numbers, depending on their requirements. Different prefixes have different costs associated to them; 0844 numbers, for example, are structured so that the customer only pays for a proportion of the cost of the call, with the business that the number is registered to covering the remaining costs. 0800 numbers go one step further; with the full cost of all incoming calls being paid for by the business. Recent research on the subject has shown that businesses that use 0800 non geographical numbers enjoy a much higher response rate to advertising compared to businesses using geographical numbers.

One other advantage to non geographical telephone numbers is that all incoming calls to that registered number can be directed to any other registered telephone number in the country. So therefore, if one of your offices is having problems with their telephone lines, or if an office is moving location, incoming calls can be re-routed to another office with no loss in service for the customer.

So once you have decided that your business can benefit from a non geographical telephone number, how do you go about finding a suitable company with which to register your new number? Well, there are many companies in the market but finding the right one is not as easy at it may seem.

In order to find the best deal, spend some time on the internet searching for reputable companies that can offer a good package for your business. Some non geographical telephone numbers can be free to register with some companies, and some may even offer free startup costs, free registration and no monthly charges as an incentive; though these offers will only be available for certain prefixes.

It is important to note, before you choose a telephone number, try to acquire a number that is easily remembered. This means that if a customer notices an advertisement containing the number, there is more chance that they will call. Also, bear in mind non geographical numbers are usually charged at a standardized flat rate no matter what time of day, which means an added benefit for customers.
