Much controversy continues to surround president-elect Barack Obama’s choice of Rev. Rick Warren to give the invocation at his upcoming inaugural ceremony on January 20, 2009.

Warren is very popular among the Christian right. He is the California mega-church, anti-gay marriage pastor, who during the campaign last fall held a meeting at the Saddleback church which featured the Republican candidate and President-elect Obama.Warren is the Christian leader who equates committed gay relationships to incest, polygamy and “an older guy marrying a child.”

We believe Warren’s selection is merely symbolic. It’s a political token to those who despite casting a vote for Barack Obama support California’s Proposition 8, banning gay marriages, and other similar legislation abridging the rights of all homosexual citizens.

We think lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender folk must consider the quality of Mr. Obama’s policies. The character of his religious advisors, whether Rev. Jeremiah Wright or Rev. Rick Warren, is not the reason he was elected.

As the gay citizens reflect upon that point we believe Rev. Warren and those who agree with him should reconsider their position. Warren could help unite our nation by becoming less of a symbol and provide more substance by behaving more like Christ. He should recant his reprehensible remarks.

We believe Jesus would exhibit more tolerance, more compassion, and understanding. Most of all we believe He would be more loving toward gay citizens. That’s what we think Jesus would do.

That’s what we think Rev. Warren and his cohorts must do to make ours a more perfect union.

Damon Weaver is a student reporter at the Katherine E. Cunningham Elementary School in Canal Point, Palm Beach County, Florida.

You may have seen Damon’s interview of Vice-President-elect Joe Biden during a campaign visit to Palm Beach County last fall. Now Damon wants an interview with President-elect Barack Obama. Watch this video request:
Damon along with, KEC-TV News Director/teacher Brian Zimmerman, and many of his fellow students, including those who work with him at the school news broadcast outlet, parental and teacher supporters and his many fans across the Internet, would love to see Damon secure an interview with President-elect Barack Obama during the week of the inaugural.

The problem is the adults who make such decisions have rejected Damon’s request and the deadline to receive such credentials has passed. We’d love to see Damon covering the news story, an interview of Mr. Obama

Here’s the introduction and the Biden interview done last fall.

The Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme of $50 Billion has adversely affected two foundations that have been generous, longstanding supporters of the national security and reproductive freedom work performed by the American Civil Liberties Union. The two foundations have been damaged by the Madoff scandal — forced to close their doors and terminate their grants.
According to Alma Montclair, Director of Administration and Finance for the ACLU $850, 000 from the two now terminated grants will not be received in 2009. Despite the bad news, Montclair says the good news is the organization is committed to continuing their critical work in the areas of national security and reproductive freedom because people are depending on the ACLU to help protect their rights. Basically the ACLU needs money and they are hoping you and your friends and family can help them to help us stay free by making a donation by year’s end.

If you are unfamiliar with the work done by the American Civil Liberties Union take a look at this informative video.

For the first time in 42 years a sitting governor of the great state of Florida got married.

On, Friday, December 12, 2008 in an early evening ceremony in St. Petersburg, Florida Republican governor Charles Crist exchanged vows with socialite millionaire Carole Rome. Crist promised to love, cherish and honor his new wife, the president of her family’s Halloween costume company, in the presence of family, friends and political associates at the First United Methodist Church.

This is the second marriage for both the governor and the former Ms Rome.

While invited guests helped the newly weds celebrate their union, a few protesters organized by Impact Florida gathered in the park across the street from the church to demonstrate their displeasure with the fact gays in Florida can not enjoy the same freedom to marry the one they love.

We’re sending holiday blessings along with best wishes for the season to our friends at the Love and Charity Mission in Racine, Wisconsin and Love and Charity Mission II in Memphis, Tennessee.

picture credit: Jim Bovin-Journal Sentinel, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Mother Louis Hunter-Milligan is the founder and leader of the mission, who for more than forty years has made a positive and lasting impression upon hundreds, if not thousands of less fortunate men, women and children, people who have passed through the doors of this charitable mission.

“Mother Hunter seems to have a aura of God,” says the Reverend Dennis James Woods. Woods is the author of the griping biography “Love and Charity: the life and story of Louise Hunter and the Love and Charity Homeless Shelter”. Rev. Woods says Hunter’s whole life has been devoted to this ministry and her community; and Mother Hunter concurs: “This really is my life. It has been a blessing for me to help others,”

Mother Hunter’s energy is endless. In the late 1990s she opened a sister shelter, Love and Charity II, in Memphis, Tennessee. This legendary American humanitarian still begins her day at five o’clock in the morning—ready to greet anyone who comes to Love and Charity with a warm meal and an open heart.

We quote Mother Louise Hunter, a champion for the socially disadvantaged:

“Love and Charity is a ministry. It’s a hard ministry at times. People don’t even realize that tonight somebody is sleeping outside. Somebody’s child. So I try to do all I can.”

We encourage you to make this holiday season a blessing for the people of the Love and Charity Mission in Racine, Wisconsin by sending your contribution to:

Love and Charity Homeless Mission
1031 Douglas Avenue
Racine Wisconsin 53403
Or telephone: 262-634-7059 to offer your assistance in person to the helpers and those who benefit from the help you provide.

Myron Rolle wants to be a professional football player, and a neurosurgeon, as well as a successful Rhodes Scholar.

Many have said Rolle is over-hyped and over-rated. Even FSU’s defensive coordinator, Mickey Andrews, last year criticized Rolle for, get this, studying too much!

On the day Rolle, a junior safety, was named a Rhodes Scholar he then joined his team after his scholarship interview to play the second half against Maryland.

Gee, Andrews, how do you feel about Rolle, his studies and his football performance now?

In our opinion he not only lives up to the title of “student-athlete” he surpasses it!

Rolle is only one of 32 students to receive the Rhodes award for 2009, and his chances of being a successful professional football player are fantastic, too!

We say have at it, Myron. Do it all! Do it ’till you’re satisfied. We wish this champion Florida State University athlete and leader in academics much success. We believe he will do it all quite well.

The buzz everywhere is that Bernard Madoff’s investment business was nothing but a fraud. Word on the street is that it’s been fraudulent for at least the past ten years of its existence!

We’re wondering how it is that no one else who worked for the company was aware of the lack of funds to stay afloat. It is after all a family business. Madoff was so proud of this fact it was widely promoted on the company web site stating, “…the owner’s name is on the door. Clients know that Bernard Madoff has a personal interest in maintaining the unblemished record of value, fair-dealing, and high ethical standards that has always been the firm’s hallmark. ”

Is Bernie the sacrificial lamb? Is he protecting the other members of his family from prosecution? Stay tuned folks as the saga of rich today poor tomorrow continues to unfold.
