The Samsung Wave 2 – Information & Advice
The Samsung Wave 2 follows hot on the tail of the original Wave, which was Samsung’s first smartphone to use their own operating platform, called Bada. The Wave got a good reception, which had as much to do with all the top technology and features Samsung included, as it did their Bada platform; but what does the Samsung Wave 2 offer mobile users, and will it be as popular as its older brother?
On the face of it, there’s no doubting that the Wave 2 has inherited the original’s good looks. With a sleek and polished design, the phone might not be iPhone beautiful, but it is pretty stunning. When you switch it on, the 3.2 inch screen is clear and bright, even though it doesn’t share the same AMOLED technology that went into the first Wave. The essential touchscreen that all smartphones seem to need these days is responsive and automatically changes the display to suit the phone’s orientation, thanks to the inbuilt accelerometer.
As you would expect from a manufacturer such as Samsung, the Wave 2 offers plenty of connectivity options, and even though it relies on GPRS and EDGE rather than 3G, it uses the latest Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS to keep users in touch, wherever they may be. There is also an FM radio, which often gets overlooked in some of the other smartphones, and the handy feature that lets you record direct from the radio is a bonus.
Probably one of the more interesting aspects of the Wave 2 is Samsung’s own Bada operating platform. The mobile manufacturer is committed to developing more of their phones on this platform, even though many feel the market it already overcrowded. With support for developers, to make sure Bada gets the features and apps that it needs to be a success, Samsung is pinning its hopes on the Wave 2 to introduce and promote Bada to a wider audience.
The Wave 2 complements its Bada platform with Samsung’s own Touchwiz user interface, which is simple and enjoyable to use. Social Hub helps the most active networkers keep in touch with all their contacts, and Samsung even has its very own app store. With a 3.2 megapixel camera and the ability to record video, the Wave 2 performs well on the camera front, if not quite up to the standard of the original Wave or the more expensive smartphones.
On the face of it, the features and spec of the Samsung Wave 2 might leave some of the original Wave fans feeling a little short-changed. However, the reality is that Samsung wants to ensure Bada’s growth by taking it to the masses; and by creating a more affordable smartphone for the mid-market, that has the look and feel of a much more expensive phone, and unique functionality that many will enjoy, they seem to have got it just right.
