Why Health Care Reform Big Victory For President Obama
After over a year of battle against the Republicans, Fox News, the Tea Party, and the health insurance industry, President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party were finally able to make the Health Care Reform Bill the new law of the United States.
It is hard to overstate the importance of the health care victory for President Obama. It’s a legislative victory so big that it boosts Obama into the debate about the greatest American Presidents of the past 100 years. Universal health care has been a goal for progressives since Theodore Roosevelt first proposed the idea in the early 1900s.
And as big as the win is for Obama, it is just as big of a loss for the Republicans because they put everything they had on trying to take down this bill and they got beat. Far right wing Republican Senator Jim Demint of South Carolina was caught on tape saying he thought the GOP could “break” Obama if they could just beat his health care reform bill. He said it would be Obama’s “Waterloo” but as former George W. Bush speechwriter David Frum noted in a recent column, it is now the Republican party’s “Waterloo.”
This is because all of the outrageous lies that the Republican party told about the bill only work politically if the bill never becomes the law. Then they can say that they “defended America” from some evil plot and since it never happened there would be no easy to see evidence that they were lying. This is how the GOP won a huge victory at the polls in 1994 after beating President Clinton’s health care reform.
But now that the health care reform bill has been signed into law by the President average Americans will inevitably find that they actually really like the changes made by the bill since they are extremely positive for the vast majority of Americans.
The Republicans are now campaigning for the November elections with the ludicrous slogan “Repeal and Replace” but this will seem like an increasingly bad idea as everyday Americans find out what a huge positive the reform actually is. A majority of the American voters will realize that the GOP has done absolutely nothing but lie about this topic for the last year and this will probably lead to a very good November for the Democrats in 2010.
