Murder of Trayvon Martin To Be Investigated by DOJ and FBI
Mounting pressure in the Trayvon Martin tragedy has succeeded in bringing forth the following result:
Just moments ago the federal Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the FBI announced they will be investigating the murder of Miami Gardens teenager by a neighborhood watch volunteer.
The department announced late Monday it has begun an investigation into the fatal shooting death of an unarmed black teen, Trayvon Martin, in Sanford, Florida by a self appointed neighborhood watch captain.
Martin, a Miami, Florida teen, was murdered on February 26, 2012. Despite the fact his assailant admitted to police investigators he fatally shot the unarmed teenager, who was within his rights to be at the gated community; the man, George Zimmerman, has not been charged, arrested or otherwise detained for questioning. Police say they haven’t sufficient evidence to hold him. It has been more than three weeks since the teenager was deprived of his life. According to recordings of Zimmerman’s call to the Sanford Police dispatcher the young teen was reported to be “suspicious” in his appearance and behavior.
In a statement late Monday evening, March 19, 2012, the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced it will be performing an independent review of the evidence and take appropriate action.
In a memo sent late on Monday, March 19, 2012, to Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner, Gerald Bradley, was directed by Florida’s Governor Rick Scott to help local authorities in their investigation because the circumstances surrounding the death “have caused significant concern within the Sanford community and the state.”
After almost a month the local and state authorities, as well as the federal government has finally responded to the pleas of the family, local community organizations like the NAACP and congressional representatives.
Now let’s impress upon the investigators the importance of finding this man and holding him for questioning.
We encourage George Zimmerman to turn himself in to the authorities as quickly as possible to bring this matter to a close.
