Balfour Suspect In Chicago Hudson Family Murders Indicted
William Balfour, 27, was indicted during an appearance in an Illinois courtroom today. Balfour is the estranged husband of singer actress Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia.
Prosecutors allege he killed Hudson family members October 24, 2008 in their home in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago because he thought Julia had a new boyfriend. Slain were Jennifer's and Julia's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57; their brother, Jason, 29, and Julia's 7-year-old son, Julian King.
Balfour is also charged with home invasion. He is being held without bond on a parole violation at the Stateville Correctional Center near Joliet. Today, his attorney asked Judge Maria Cecil to transfer him to Cook County Jail so he could be closer to his family. She took the request under advisement.
The indictment--on exactly the same charges as filed against Balfour earlier--relieves prosecutors of having to detail their evidence at a preliminary hearing.
Prosecutors have alleged Balfour told a girlfriend the day of the slayings that he killed Donerson and Jason Hudson and later lied to police about his travel that day.
His attorney has said there's no evidence to connect Balfour with the crime.
