Escape From Childhood Abuse
Jun 27, 2025 in Books, You Think So
In one summer I went from fighting off a Giant Alaskan Malemute, trained to kill in Viet Nam, to fighting for my life against my mother and father. The abuse had been ongoing, for almost 15 years. But in that era – it all happened behind closed doors – unless you could see the physical marks, which my mother went to great efforts to conceal, no one was going to interfere with how parents disciplined their own children. It was still the time of “Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child.” Of course, even in that model I don’t think it was ever intended that the parent abuse the child every single day. That was my mother’s special template, reserved only for me and my one year younger brother. My four younger siblings escaped it entirely.
