Jonathan Cook: Why Western Media Is Afraid of Julian Assange

Feb 25, 2023 in You Think So

At the end of last month Jonathan Cook , an award-winning British journalist, spoke before a group  gathered to hear speeches about Secret Power, Media Freedom and Democracy, held at St Pancras Church, London, on Saturday 28 January 2023. Other speakers were former British ambassador Craig Murray and Italian investigative journalist Stefania Maurizi, author of the recent Secret Power: Wikileaks and its Enemies.

Jeremy Corbyn, former leader of the British Labour Party, presented the Gavin MacFayden award, the only media prize voted on by whistleblowers, to Julian Assange for being “the journalist whose work most exemplifies the importance of a free press”. Craig Murray accepted the award on Assange’s behalf. Murray is a close personal friend of Assange, his wife, and his family.

“What drives a paper like the Guardian or New York Times is not their inner moral values. It is simply that they have a market. In the UK, there is a market called “educated liberals”. Educated liberals want to buy a newspaper like the Guardian, and therefore an institution arises to fulfil that market. … What is in the newspaper is not a reflection of the values of the people in that institution, it is a reflection of the market demand.” Julian Assange

In his Substack account Jonathan Cook memorialized his remarks presented as he advocates for a fellow journalist as well as for all the journalists who are affected by this incident.

In the video Cook provides a breakdown of what journalism is, how Julian Assange, and Wikileaks changed the industry.

We’re posting to keep you in the know about this important matter.

Belmarsh Tribunal Sidney, Australia, March 4th 2023

Feb 25, 2023 in You Think So

    An Announcement from Progressive International

“Julian Assange, the Australian publisher who founded WikiLeaks, now faces 175 years in prison if extradited from the Belmarsh Prison where he is currently held in the United Kingdom. Assange’s case is the first time in history that a publisher has been indicted under the US Espionage Act.

Inspired by the Russell-Sartre Tribunals of the Vietnam War, the Belmarsh Tribunal brings together a range of expert witnesses — from lawyers to journalists to parliamentarians, union officials, whistleblowers and human rights defenders — to present evidence of this attack on publishers, to seek justice for the crimes they expose, and to demand the Biden Administration cease this prosecution.

Since its launch in 2020, the Progressive International has hosted four Belmarsh Tribunals, convening parliamentarians and public figures in a virtual tribunal (2020), at Church House at Westminster (2021), at the People’s Forum in New York City (2022) and at the National Press Club in Washington DC (2023).”

Recorded remarks made by human rights attorney Steven Donziger at the January 2023 gathering of the Belmarsh Tribunal.

The Philadelphia Eagles @ SB LVII: Call The Cops! They Was Robbed!

Feb 19, 2023 in You Think So

We were very excited, pumped up, and over the moon about the Philadelphia Eagles meeting the Kansas City Chiefs in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday, February 12, 2023. It was Super Bowl LVII,  Fifty-seven, (57) for those who are deficient in Roman numeral literacy.

Our hopes were dashed and decimated when something happened in the 3rd quarter, followed by a real bad call in the 4th quarter…with the result our team lost!

Have heart. All is not lost…just the NFL’s annual biggest game of the season. Do not despair.
The Philly Iggles have set a kind of a dubious Super Bowl record. (more…)

    Higher Ground Lyrics
    [Verse 1]
    People keep on learning
    Soldiers keep on warring
    World keep on turning
‘Cause it won’t be too long

    [Verse 2]
    Powers keep on lying
While your people keep on dying
    World keep on turning
‘Cause it won’t be too long

    [Chorus]
I’m so darn glad he let me try it again
Because my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I’m so glad that I know more than I knew then
    Going to keep on trying
‘Til I reach my highest ground

    [Verse 3]
    Teachers keep on teaching
    Preachers keep on preaching
    World keep on turning
‘Cause it won’t be too long
    Oh no

    [Verse 4]
    Lovers keep on loving
    Believers keep on believing
    Sleepers just stop sleeping
‘Cause it won’t be too long
    Oh no

    [Chorus]
I’m so glad that he let me try it again
‘Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I’m so glad that I know more than I knew then
    Going to keep on trying
‘Til I reach my highest ground
