You Think What?

In Canadian author Margret Atwood’s 1990 novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” she describes a period sometime in the future following nuclear war where a totalitarian theocratic government is in place in a country called Gilead, that has replaced the United States of America. Because of dangerously low reproduction rates, Handmaids are assigned to bear children for elite couples who have trouble conceiving.

Recently an article appeared in the British publication the Daily Mail reporting the virtues and reasons as proposed by a government official, the Minister of State for Public Health, to justify radical birth control for British teens. Although this is an idea being fomented in the UK it is not beyond the realm of possibility the abstraction could find life here across the pond. Finally last week, after years of waiting, the United States House of Representatives faced down the Bush White House over two very important constitutional issues.

The first was approval of the civil and criminal contempt proceedings against two associates of the Bush administration. The House has found former White House Counsel Harriet Miers, in contempt of Congress. You may recall she said the president is the smartest man she knows. This statement suggests to us Mrs Miers doesn’t get out much. Current White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten is also charged. Both Miers and Bolten chose to ignore a House Judiciary Committee subpoena issued during the hearings investigating the 2006 firings of nine US Attorneys for what appears to have been political reasons. Those who were fired refused to comply with demands by Republicans to bring weak cases involving voter fraud against Democrats (more…)

It’s Black History month. We bring to your attention a little known historical fact about black men serving as officers in the United States Navy as non-commissioned and commissioned officers.

So much for money being an indicator of political strength.

Rudy Guiliani raised lots of cash, even breaking the fund raising to delegates gained record of the late governor of Texas, John Connelly for most money raised and spent to gain the lowest number of delegates. Guiliani’s delegates, all two of them cost him 15 million dollars each. That’s a whole heap of lot of votin’ Daddy! Rudy is done. He’s toast It’s over for Mister Nine-One-One!

Just when you thought nothing could possibly top that, John Edwards comes along and concedes to the black guy with the big ears and funny name and to the thick ankled female with the strident voice whose husband was once the C-I-C . (more…)

After Fred Thompson, the actor, rightly said, “I’m outta here!” Rudy Guiliani, America’s mayor but apparently not destined to be America’s president, accepted defeat.
