At the next meeting of the Volusia County Council on Thursday, August 7, 2008 in Deland, The Volusia County/ Flagler County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, along with mental health professionals and concerned citizens, will call on the council to take appropriate strong action toward more humane treatment of mentally ill persons who are detained in the county facility. “The Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) (also known as the Marriage Protection Amendment) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution which would define marriage in the United States as a union of one man and one woman. The FMA also would prevent judicial extension of marriage rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples, as well as preventing people from having multiple spouses. The most recent vote to take place on the proposed Amendment occurred in the United States House of Representatives on July 18, 2006 when the Amendment failed 236 yea to 187 nay votes, falling short of the 290 yea votes required for passage. The Senate has only voted on cloture motions with regards to the proposed Amendment, the last of which was on June 7, 2006 when the motion failed 49 yea to 48 nay votes, falling short of the 60 yea votes required to proceed to consideration of the Amendment.” (more…)

In a controversial and unprecedented move several airline corporations have announced they will be charging passengers to get off flights when they arrive at major U.S. city destinations such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and New York.

This news comes following the recent announcement by American Airlines to charge a $15 fee for the first piece of checked baggage on domestic flights.

“I purchase a ticket to fly to a city. I purchase a pass to get off the plane, too?? This is an outrage!” says Bob F. Flyer who frequently flies around the country for business.

“I welcome the opportunity to pay to get off any flight, especially in Chicago.  I’ve spent many hours waiting on the tarmac to deplane and take ground transportation to my business appointments.” That response from Sally S. Travellier who flies the business class flights for her work as an efficiency expert for the federal government.

What can we expect next? Pay toilets on airplanes?

We believe it is time for a woman to be President of the United States of America. There is no good reason why a female should not be the leader of this nation. (more…)
