As a public service YouThinkWhat presents another article to inform and edify banking consumers. We suspect while we’re all focusing on Gitmo, the auto industry and John Yoo, et al, the bankers, taking full advantage of our attention being diverted from them, are planning their next scheme.
We present A Banking Faerie Tale.
Once upon a time there was a very rich king named Sam Daddy-dearest, who had many daughters. The princesses had names like Skank of America, Sniti Skank, and Wacky Skank.
They were all very rich. Each princess owning her very own kingdom, a domain for which they were in charge with lots of money. Their domain was to collect money from others; just like the aristocracy of old, the counts, the dukes, and the landed gentry who collected taxes, grain, food, livestock and gold from the serfs, except these princesses collected money. But they were not satisfied to have lots of money, and besides they had extravagant habits. They wanted to play skanky banky. (more…)

Watch this video of Stephen Colbert, of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report”, pronounced Col-bear Ree-poorh, as he takes comedic umbrage with the decision of the venerable newspaper The Philadelphia Inquirer for its decision to hire John Yoo, the architect of the Bush administration’s torture policy, to write a monthly column. We came across an interesting quote by the late American novelist, writer, playwright, poet, essayist and civil rights activist James Baldwin.
“What societies really, ideally, want is a citizenry which will simply obey the rules of society.
If a society succeeds in this, that society is about to perish.”
James Baldwin, “A Talk to Teachers,” 1963

Say consumers get in on the latest craze sweeping the nation that’s fun for the whole entire family. It’s called Fantasy Banking! That’s right! Join in on this exciting new way to play like the aristocracy. You can “own” a financial institution.
Just like when you “own” a fantasy sports team you don’t really own a team like the Major League Baseball World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies. You are pretending with your friends who are also pretending they “own” teams like Hal Steinbrenner’s New York Yankees; or if you play in a football fantasy league your friend might pretend to “own” the reigning National Football League (NFL) SuperBowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers while you might pretend to “own” the Philadelphia Eagles; or you may have the misfortune to “own” the Detroit Lions, who have the dubious distinction of having the worst record, ever, in the NFL . When you “own” fantasy sports (more…)

As the revelations about the U.S. policy on torture continue, even as Speaker Pelosi and the CIA debate whether or not she knew about their plans to use excessive force with detainees we are reminded of Mark Fiore’s animated cartoon from April 22, 2009 featuring the character Fuzzy the Conciliation Caterpillar. It’s that time of year friends. It’s the season when some one begins an interplanetary hoax about cell phone numbers going public. We received an email this morning from one of our fans suggesting we pass this faulty bit of information to our friends.
This baseless rumor has been around for at least four years. (more…)

DOCTOROW’s LAW:
“Any time someone puts a lock on something you own, against your wishes, and doesn’t give you the key, it’s not being done to your benefit.”
Cory Doctorow, an activist for technology issues, is also a science fiction novelist of renown, and a blogger.
We recently discovered video of a presentation he made earlier this year, during the O’Reilly Tools for Change for Publishing Conference, on the subject of Digital Rights Management or DRM. (more…)
