Hurley Haywood Fills Grand-Am Driver Vacancy Left By France Family Member
News reports out of Jacksonville, Florida, today indicate smart leadership at NASCAR/Grand-AM headquarters and team Brumos.
Hurley Haywood, a legend in sports car auto racing, will be filling the spot abruptly left vacant by grandson of NASCAR founder, the late Bill France Sr., son of Jim France, founder of the Grand-Am circuit and cousin to Brian France, NASCAR CEO and chairman; Jamie France.
“As far as we’re concerned, J.C. has been a very loyal teammate for seven years. We’re going to support him throughout this.”
Fortunately for auto racing fans there are people at the top of the company who are infinitely smarter than the smarter dumbbell.
Hurley Haywood, currently the Chief Driving Instructor at the Porsche Sport Driving School in Birmingham, Alabama, is a five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona. He will be partnering with Joao Barbosa in the No. 59 Porsche-powered Riley prototype. Haywood will qualify and start the car for the Grand Prix of Miami, then let Barbosa finish the race.
We like the compassion expressed by Haywood when speaking to reporters about the previous team member and the status of the team:
“The program is not in jeopardy. Right now, our real concern is J.C. and we will support him as he works through this.” ~Hurley Haywood on driving No. 59 Porsche-powered Riley prototype in the Grand-Am race today, Saturday October 10, 2009
This man sounds like a class act. We wish the team much success.
