Madelyn Dunham, 86, Obama’s Grandmother Dies
Madelyn Lee (nee Payne) Dunham, the 86 year-old maternal grandmother of Senator Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate, passed away quietly in her sleep at her home in Hawaii on Sunday, November 2, 2008. Senator Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng was at her bedside at the time of death. In late October the candidate had suspended his campaign to spend some time with her because of her declining health and after she’d had a hip injury. She suffered severe osteoporosis as well as cancer.
The senator acknowledged her death publicly on Monday night at a rally in North Carolina saying “It’s hard to talk about”. Mr. Obama credits his maternal grandparents with being extremely influential in his development.A statement about their grandmother’s death was released by Senator Obama and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng saying in part, “She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility.”
At a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina on November 3, 2008 Obama said, “She was one of those quiet heroes that we have all across America. They’re not famous. Their names are not in the newspapers, but each and every day they work hard. They aren’t seeking the limelight. All they try to do is just do the right thing.”
We send our solemn sympathy to the family and friends of Madelyn Dunham.
