No More Support For Israel
We agree with the writer, “Chilean Jew” at the Daily Kos who said on Sunday, December 28, 2008, “Today I end my support of Israel.” There are many Americans, as individuals and as organizations, who support Israel. A few of the groups and individuals who provide funding to Israel are not Jewish or Zionist organizations. We are not Zionists. We can not continue to support a country unwilling to grant self-determination to a neighboring people. We’re done tolerating the slaughter, the murders and barbaric occupation of an impoverished people, the utter disregard for human life.
We see the recent so-called defensive attacks by Israelis on the Palestinians as excessive. Sort of like if someone, a Palestinian for example, talks trash about harming you, tosses several paper missiles at you (Israel) and misses every time. You respond by blowing up his home and killing his family. We say this action is retaliatory, excessive and wrong.
Our understanding is the attacks by a rebel faction of the extremist Palestinian group Hamas could be considered a mere annoyance since their missiles are inaccurate and have not killed or injured anyone in Israel. We think the Israeli government’s reaction is one of overkill and very inappropriate.
We say it is time for the U.S. Department of State to show some courage and strength of conviction by telling the Israelis they must stop their contribution to the chaos in the Middle East.
Whether or not they wish to acknowledge it, the other nations of the world know the government of Israel responds to directives from Washington.
The Israeli government must be told to end the bombing and killing in the Gaza Strip or there will be consequences and repercussions from the United States government.
We hope the new administration, along with international governments who say they abhor violence, will have the courage to do what is right, using some leverage with both sides, in order to bring an effective peace accord to that particular part of the world.
