Tiger Woods: First Billionaire Athlete
Tiger Woods, by winning the $10 million bonus at last week’s PGA Tour Championship at Atlanta, is now the first BILLIONAIRE ATHLETE. Congratulations! This achievement puts Woods into the same financial category as Oprah, Michael Jordan, Bob Johnson and Johnson’s former wife Sheila Johnson.
Tiger Woods is 33 years old. He is the married father of two children, a daughter and a son.
He is the world’s highest-paid athlete since 2002, even with the loss of the General Motors’ Buick division endorsement package. Retired NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan is second. Jordan earns $45 million yearly; the majority of his earnings from endorsements for the Nike shoe and sports apparel company.
Speaking of Nike….Nike, Inc’s Golf brand is a company that loves Tiger Woods. That is why they are happy to share the proceeds from the sales of Nike Golf products with him. Because his presence as an endorser of their golf brand has moved the company from start up to one of the fastest growing brands in the sport; they’ve even named a building after him at their company headquarters’ campus in Beaverton, Oregon.
He makes $3 million in appearances fees outside the United States.
He has more career major wins and career PGA Tour wins than any other active golfer. He is the youngest player to achieve the career Grand Slam, and the youngest and fastest to win 50 tournaments on tour.
Forbes estimates he had earned about $895 million before the 2009 season started.
All of these athletic and financial achievements are commendable. We desire to see, Woods, along with his celebrity counterparts who have so much more than any one person can use, use the surplus they have to help those who are less fortunate–not just especially during these challenging economic times but for all times.
