Veterans Day 2009
Commentators of the day called it ” the war to end all wars”. The nations of the world were relieved when the armistice was signed more than ninety years ago. People alive in 1918 were hopeful it was indeed the last time they would experience the devastation of war.
Sadly they were wrong. Twenty years later the world was on the threshold of being engaged in yet another war. In 1939 the rumors of war became a reality and by the end of 1941 the U.S. was fully involved in fighting in Europe and in Japan. This time the war would conclude with the use of a new more powerful weapon.
Today we honor those who served or died while in service to protect the then young nation.
We honor today’s veterans. The youthful promise of our future that will never be because of loss of life or loss of limb.
We salute the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, sons and daughters who serve as combatants in faraway places.
We are grateful for your service because we know we could not do it ourselves.
