Clement Clarke Moore Famous American Poet
Clement Clarke Moore is the name of an American poet whose popular poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” is part of the Christmas tradition around the world and has helped to establish the mythology surrounding what happens on Christmas Eve during the time when Santa Claus is said to visit to deliver gifts to all the children.
Moore was a scholar, a writer and a poet, born in 1779, just three years after the nation was born. He grew up in Manhattan in the section called Chelsea, the only son of Benjamin Moore, a president of Columbia College, (today known as Columbia University) and bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, and his wife Charity Clarke.
Clement C. Moore was graduated from Columbia College having received both his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the school. During his day Moore was known for having compiled a two volume Hebrew dictionary.
Though his mother was a supporter of the American Revolution, in later years Moore’s politics were in opposition to the freedom of all slaves. It is said he owned a few himself and was opposed to abolition. Moore died in 1863 just 2 years after the start of the War Between the States.
