Obama Quits Church Amid Fallout From Another Trinity Sermon
It was an action packed weekend. There was plenty of news. Some of it was newsworthy and some of it was not.
News that Senator and Mrs. Barack Obama and family have resigned from the Trinity Church in Chicago made big headlines over the weekend. We’re not sure but we think this is similar to the time when John Kennedy said he wouldn’t be taking orders from the Pontiff in Rome. As you may recall John Kennedy was the first Catholic elected President of the United States.
It is interesting to note the clerical players in this controversy are diverse. There’s the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. He’s the former pastor of the Trinity Church, a member church of the United Church of Christ. As a protestant minister he shares the same opinion about why 911 occurred with the Roman Catholic Republican priest from New York, Monsignor Jim Lisante. Nobody seems to make a big deal of that fact.
Chicago Roman Catholic priest Father Michael Pfleger, who mocked Senator Obama’s opponent from the Trinity Church pulpit a week ago, has gotten many people twisted about his remarks. Father Pfleger is not black. He’s been reprimanded by Chicago’s Cardinal Francis George who said Pfleger’s remarks were inappropriate.
We’re waiting, and we’ve been waiting for nearly seven years, for someone, anyone, especially in the Catholic church or the media to call Lisante out for his 911 remarks as they called out and have given a platform to Wright.
Maybe Monsignor Lisante’s invocation given at the New York State Republican dinner last Friday night signals the debut of his budding career as a comedian. Monsignor Lisante’s a comic. Rev.Wright, who is a former United States Marine, is an anarchist. Father Pfleger is considered to be a traitor to resentful whites. Yeah, right…
