Reports of Voter Suppression In North Carolina and Texas
Recent incidents of voter suppression in North Carolina and Texas have been reported.
What is voter suppression? According to the Wikipedia it is the use of governmental power, political campaign strategy, and private resources aimed at suppressing (i.e. reducing) the total vote of opposition candidacies instead of attempting to change likely voting behavior by changing the opinions of potential voters. This method is particularly effective if a significant amount of voters are intimidated individually because the voter might not consider his or her single vote important. The key words are intimidation of individual voters. This is what happened before the Voting Rights Act was made law. It was typical of election officials in the southern United States to subject voters, black voters especially to bureaucratic foolishness in order to reduce the number of votes for a particular party or candidate.
With the new laws enacted by the Bush administration and the Republican party to “help” citizens vote we face a new era of voter suppression.
What is the solution? Get a quick education about voter regulations in your state. GWB enacted measures to “assist” voters. Voters must work to help themselves. Know the regulations for early voting; all states permit early voting. Know the regulations for the kinds of identification accepted when making your vote. If you believe something illegal has been done report it to this site.
VOTE early! Steal back your vote. VOTE because this time your life really does depend on it!
