Tragedy and Mayhem in Boston: Fred Rogers Provides Help for Youngsters and Parents
There is no doubt the news of the deadly bombing incidents, which took place on Monday, April 15, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts, during the annual Boston Marathon, is upsetting to adults as well as children.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.” ~ the late Fred Rogers
In the following video the late Fred Rogers, a Presbyterian minister; former teevee host for the popular PBS children’s program “Mister Rogers Neighborhood”, and nearly everyone’s favorite friend and neighbor, suggests to us ways of assuring, coping while calming the little ones, as well as our grown up selves, when sudden tragic news becomes the top story of the day.
Do your best to keep the television off, or at least limit how much you and/or your child sees of any news event.
Try to keep yourself calm. Your presence can help your child feel more secure.
Give your child extra comfort and physical affection, like hugs or snuggling up together with a favorite book.
Physical comfort goes a long way towards providing inner security. That closeness can nourish you, too.
