Kevin Everett Buffalo Bills Update: Walking On His Own
Latest reports indicate Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett is experiencing a miraculous recovery from a spinal cord injury. He is walking.
Everett’s recovery has been the NFL’s most inspirational story this season. He was the Buffalo Bills’ third-round draft pick in 2005. Everett is soft-spoken and reserved and regarded highly by teammates and friends.
A source close to the family tells the Associated Press, “He doesn’t have a full natural stride but, yeah, he’s walking.” The source also reports Everett has been walking under his own power since his release from Memorial Hermann/TIRR three weeks ago and is now an outpatient there. The family friend says Everett is driven from his Houston-area home by car to attend daily rehab sessions and is able to walk to and from the facility
Paralyzed from the neck down when he arrived at Buffalo’s Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital, Everett spent the first few days on life support after a life-threatening injury while making a tackle in the September 9th season opener against Denver.
Doctors who attended him initially feared he would never walk again. A more more positive prognosis was issued a few days later when Everett showed movement in his legs and arms and was sensitive to touch. His improvement was so steady during his first two weeks he was transferred to Houston for the next stage of rehab. Everett makes his off season home in Houston. Doctors believed it important for Everett to be close to family and friends.
When released from Memorial Hermann, Everett said in a statement how inspired he was after meeting many people who have similar injuries. “Their courage and determination inspired me to fight every day for recovery of my ability to walk,” Everett said. “While this news is a significant milestone for me, I still have a long journey to full recovery.”
