We Think: It’s Time For A General Strike!
As a result of the success of the protest march held in Jena Louisiana on September 20, 2007 to demonstrate citizen displeasure with injustice perpetrated on our young people all across the nation. Knowing now the legal authorities in Jena are adamant about their determination to unfairly punish the Jena Six; keeping in mind the frustration we all feel with the Iraq war, the state of our nation’s health care systems, housing and mortgage issues, education, the lack of useful information provided by our American free press and the fact our president has continually worked in concert with federal legilators to decimate our constitutional rights we agree with Garret Keizer a contributing editor of HARPER’s Magazine.
In the October 2007 issue of HARPER’s Magazine Keizer suggests, and we think it’s a good suggestion, it’s time for a general strike. We’re all fed up with inequality in the justice system as exhibited in the Jena Six matter; we’re all fed up with politicians, like Congressional House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who, display no backbone or desire to go after the Bush-Cheney-Rove administration for their massive abuses and ongoing corruption of our govenrment. The heathcare crisis that affects our elderly citizens and our youngest most vulnerable citizens our hope for the future is a great source of concern as well as frustration. The crisis we face in employment with even professional jobs being sent overseas.
We can do something about this. We can organize and set a strategy to send a message to our government that we will not be doormats any longer!
If we can find out about the winner of American Idol whether we’ve an interest in the trival program’s results or not; if we activists from earlier times who had no Internet, cell phonesnor mass media communications of any kind could stand up for what is right why can we not do the same?
General strikes, as Keizer writes, are not new. Everybody’ s doin’ it. Mexicans demonstrated for more than 6 months because their presidential election was stolen from them; Ukrainians in 2004 held a general strike, even this year 2007 in New Guinea a general strike was held.
So if you are among those who bemoan our national situation by saying, “I’m just sick over what is happening to our country, but I just don’t know what to do.”
We say start planning now for a General Strike…Washington, D.C would be a great location…. November 6, 2007 would be a good day to strike.
