Bringing The Third World Home: USA Child Labor Abuses in Agriculture
There was a time in the U.S. when we believed the child labor abuses were a thing of the past. Even the mention of the phrase “child labor” brought to mind nineteenth century sweatshops in New York City’s Lower Manhattan or visions of youngsters pulling plows or harvesting crops on farm acreage found in the agricultural centers of other locations.
NBC Bay Area’s Investigative Unit found children working a full day in the fields picking, trimming and cultivating fresh fruits and vegetables. The children often work nine to ten hours a day in temperatures of 100 degrees or more. The video presented here provides proof our government is indeed “bringing the Third World home”. These child labor abuses are taking place in the United States, from North Carolina to California. According to the reporter everyone interviewed worked on “a large farm”. Children as young six or seven working long hours in the heat of the day, missing school because they have to work in the fields to help their parents provide life’s necessities…food, shelter, clothing.
As you view the video report be mindful the children are not working in China, not Indonesia, not in Guatemala, not in Mexico – or some banana republic far from our American shores.
We present this video report as a public service, because “Americans are clueless… largely in the dark” about how their food gets from the farm to the supermarket, and finally their table. While you watch remember the youngsters in this investigative report are American citizens…born in the USA.
