Hot Dog Champion Eats 54 3/4 in 12 Minutes

We wrote about this man last year,( see YTW July 6, 2005 ) and once again he has achieved victory over his hotdog chomping opponents. Takeru Kobayashi, 27,
has won his sixth straight title in the annual Independence Day hot dog eating competition on Coney Island, held at the original Nathan's Famous hot dog stand on Brooklyn, New York's seashore.

This time he broke his own record, of 53 1/2 hot dogs, set at the same competition two years ago, by consumming a sickening 53 3/4 frankfurters in 12 minutes to win.
Kobayashi's nearest competitor was Joey Chestnut, a 220-pound civil engineering student from San Jose, California, who set an American record by eating 50 hot dogs during a qualifying tournament in Las Vegas.

Though Chestnut jumped out to an early lead in the competition, it was 160 pound Takeru Kobayashi who prevailed when he passed Chestnut with about three minutes left in the contest. Mazal tov! Takeru is champion hotdog eater again.
